Nipple Correction

Inverted nipples, where nipples point inwards instead of outwards, are much more common than you might think!  Both men and women can be affected by the condition which can affect one or both breasts.  Nipple correction is a surprisingly quick and relatively straight forward operation which can be performed under local anaesthetic.

Our specialist Consultant Plastic Surgeon can:

  • Restore nipples to a more normal appearance
  • Improve asymmetry
  • Enhance the look of your breasts
  • Help to increase body confidence

Why would surgery to correct inverted nipples benefit me?

Although not uncommon inverted nipples are rarely discussed.  Many are born with the condition.  For others it can develop as a result of puberty, breast feeding, weight loss or more rarely breast cancer.  It is not unusual for a someone with inverted nipples to be so self-conscious of the condition that they have not talked about their concerns with their closest family or friends.  It is not surprising that this level of embarrassment can have a significant impact on intimate relationships and seriously affects body confidence.  Nipple correction surgery could enable you to wear tight fitting clothing and enjoy intimate relationships without worry and help to boost self-confidence and feel good about yourself.

Nipple Correction Consultation
An initial consultation will give you the opportunity to talk to your Consultant Plastic Surgeon about why you want surgery and what result you would like to achieve.  Our surgeon will examine your breasts, nipples and skin carefully and may take some photographs.  A full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability for surgery and your options will be discussed.

To achieve the best results, nipple correction surgery can be combined with other cosmetic procedures including a breast enlargement.

Nipple Correction Procedure

Nipple correction is performed normally under local anaesthetic and takes approximately one hour.

The cause of nipple inversion can vary from person to person but it is often due to the breast ducts being too short or there may be scarring behind the nipple.  An incision is made at the around the base of the nipple to release the breast fibres and milk ducts which allows the nipple to be repositioned.

There is a significant risk that you would be unable to breast feed following nipple correction surgery.  It is very important to consider the implications of surgery prior to proceeding with the treatment.

Nipple Surgery Recovery and Aftercare

After a nipple correction operation you can usually go home the day of surgery.

An appointment with a nurse will be made approximately seven to ten days after surgery to check your dressings and wounds.  It is important to keep your dressing dry to allow the wounds to heal.

Some swelling is normal and will settle over the first few months.

It is usually possible to return to work after the first day or two although if your work involves heavy activity it is advised to avoid this and any sport for six weeks.

Follow up appointments will be scheduled to check on your progress.

Risks associated with Nipple Correction Surgery

Like all types of surgery, there are some risks associated with nipple correction surgery.

Although the risks are unlikely, it is very important to weigh them up against the benefits of the surgery.  A consultation with your surgeon will help you to choose the right procedure and discuss any possible complications.
