A Facelift is an operation which reduces wrinkles and improves the shape of the lower face, from the eye area to the jaw line.
A facelift can help to:
- Reduce the effects of ageing
- Tighten and lift loose skin
- Reduce excess fat
- Reshape the skin of the lower face
How could a Facelift benefit me?
When you look in a mirror are you concerned that your reflection appears older than you feel? As we age the elasticity of our skin reduces and our muscles tend to slacken. Gravity, sun damage, daily stresses and our own genes all effect the ageing process. When lines appear around the chin and lips or there are grooves on the cheeks and folds in the neck a facelift can help to turn back the clock and help you to achieve a more youthful, cheerful and healthier appearance.

Facelift Consultation
An initial consultation will give you the opportunity to talk to your Consultant Plastic Surgeon about why you want surgery and what result you would like to achieve. Our surgeon will examine your face carefully and may take some photographs. A full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability for surgery and your options will be discussed.
Facelifts can give good improvements in the lower face, jawline, cheek and neck. They don’t give improvements around the eyes. To achieve this they can be combined with Upper eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) or Lower Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty).
Facelift Procedure
A facelift is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately 3 hours.
During the facelift procedure the skin and the soft tissue of the face are raised and repositioned. Incisions are made on both sides of the face. These incisions follow the hairline in the temple then pass down just in front of and behind ear therefore scars are mainly concealed after surgery. The skin and muscle (SMAS) layers of the face and neck can then be lifted and moved to the desired position. Excess skin is trimmed and fat and soft tissue can be redistributed. Finally, the incisions are closed with non-dissolving stitches.
Facelift Recovery and Aftercare
After surgery you will need to stay in hospital overnight.
Following a facelift you may notice some tightness in your face which can be managed with pain medication. There will be some swelling and bruising which will reduce and subside within two to three weeks of the operation.
A nurse will see you approximately 1 week after surgery to remove your stitches.
It is usually possible to return to work two weeks after surgery. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks.
A number of follow up appointments will be scheduled to check on your progress.
Risks associated with Facelift
Although the risks are unlikely, it is very important to weigh these up against the benefits of the surgery. A consultation with your surgeon will help you to choose the right procedure and discuss any possible complications.
