Skin Tag and Cyst Removal

Introduction

Skin tags are small growths which hang off the skin and are normally flesh coloured.  They are common, can look a little like warts and are harmless.

Cysts are usually caused by blocked glands and appear like fluid filled bumps under the skin.  They are usually harmless but can be irritating and unsightly.

If you are concerned at all about a skin lesion, it is extremely important to seek medical advice, from a GP, plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

Our expert plastic surgeon can:

  • Remove unwanted skin tags or cysts
  • Identify and remove worrying skin lesions
  • Help to restore self confidence in your skin

Why would skin tag or cyst removal benefit me?

Skin imperfections are very common.  Often these develop over our lifetimes and tend to increase with size as we age.  They are usually harmless but can be irritating if they catch on clothing or when shaving.  If you find yourself embarrassed by a large visible skin tag or cyst then surgical removal could be the preferred option for you.  Our specialist plastic surgeon will carefully asses and examine the skin lesion before deciding on the best course of treatment.

Skin Tag or Cyst Removal Consultation
An initial consultation will give you the opportunity to talk to your Consultant Plastic Surgeon about why you want surgery and what result you would like to achieve.  Our surgeon will examine your skin carefully and may take some photographs.  A full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability for surgery and your options will be discussed.

To achieve the best results, it might be appropriate to combine treatment with other cosmetic procedures including a facelift or Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Skin Tag and Cyst Removal Procedure

Skin tag or cysts are removed under local anaesthetic and you will be able to go home straight after treatment.

Local anaesthetic numbs the area before the lesion is removed.  Normally this is achieved by either shaving it flush with the surrounding skin or, for larger lesions, cutting it out.

Once a lesion has been removed it can be sent to a specialist laboratory as required to be analysed and ensure that no cancerous cells are present.

The skin will heal but both methods of removal will leave marks or scars.  These normally fade with time but do not disappear completely.

Risks with Skin Tag and Cyst Removal Surgery

Like all types of surgery, there are some risks associated with skin tag and cyst removal surgery.

Although the risks are unlikely, it is important to weigh them up against the benefits of the surgery.  A consultation with your surgeon will help you to choose the right procedure and discuss any possible complications.
